About the Wine
The Boassos didn't name the winery after the vineyard by accident.
Gabutti is the hamlet they live in. For years they sold the fruit off it to other producers — until Franco decided in the early 1970s he'd rather put his own name on the bottle.
It's a small piece of ground. 0.54 hectares, planted in 2002. Calcareous soil, 350 metres up, facing west into the afternoon.
Renato Ratti mapped this corner of Serralunga as a first-category subzone. The estate farms it like one.
Then they make it the slow way. Twenty days on the skins, fifteen of them under a submerged cap. Three years in ten-hectolitre casks. Into the bottle unfiltered.
That's not a technique list. That's a decision to build a wine you're not supposed to open this year.
In the glass it's Serralunga — dark, stony, built on bone. What I didn't expect was the perfume. Tar and dried cherry, spice, a rose note that shows up late.The tannins are dense and ripe. No bite in them.
Tasting Notes
100% Nebbiolo from the Gabutti cru. Ruby with garnet at the rim. Tar and dried herbs over sour cherry in liqueur, then sweet spice, ash and a late floral turn of rose and violet. The palate is full and tightly wound — raspberry and cherry over dense, mature tannin, with the acidity to carry it a long way. Long, savory, mineral finish. Decant, or cellar.
Critic Reviews
This shows tar and bark, as well as blueberries and notes of dark fruits. The palate is juicy, yet firm and grippy with depth and freshness that will complete the wine with some bottle age. Better in 2026. ~94 James Suckling
Sweet smoke mingles with brandied black cherries and dried rose petals, while hints of warm nutmeg and crushed violets float above the glass. The palate unfolds with wild raspberries and kirsch wrapped in firm Serralunga tannins, showing characteristic power from this western-exposed Gabutti site, while subtle notes of ash and burnt cedar stretch across a persistent finish. ~91 Wine Enthusiast
