About the Wine

Just an hour from Naples (birthplace of pizza) and the ancient ruins of Pompeii lies one of Italy’s most exciting wine stories. Meet Montedidio, a Southern Italian wine project led by the legendary Dr. Mario Ercolino and Dr. Roberta Pirone, the same powerhouse duo behind Nativ, one of Irpinia’s most exciting modern wineries.

For those who don’t know, Dr. Mario Ercolino is a titan in the Italian wine industry. His career includes helping put Feudi di San Gregorio on the map and leading winemaking projects in Puglia, producing some of the region’s most awarded wines. Today, Ercolino continues that legacy through his own portfolio, including Nativ in Irpinia and Montedidio, a project that expands his vision across Southern Italy.

While Nativ puts the spotlight on Irpinia and its volcanic terroir, Montedidio takes Ercolino’s vision beyond Campania, exploring the native grapes and distinct character of Southern Italy’s great wine regions. That brings us to Montedidio Real Academia Nero d’Avola, a wine that puts one of Sicily’s most important grapes front and center.

Nero d’Avola is Sicily’s flagship red — thick-skinned, sun-soaked, and built for richness without the weight. Think of it as Sicily’s answer to Syrah: dark fruit, spice, and enough structure to anchor a steak, balanced by the Mediterranean brightness that keeps it from feeling heavy.

The 2020 vintage delivered exactly the conditions Nero d’Avola needs: a warm spring, a summer without excessive heat, and an ideal September harvest. Montedidio captured that balance with fruit that is 100% Nero d’Avola, handpicked and cold-soaked for two days before fermentation in stainless steel at a controlled 26–28°C. After malolactic conversion in tank, the wine rested on its lees for five months before bottling. The result is a wine with the depth and complexity you'd expect at thirty bucks, not thirteen.

In the glass, it’s deep ruby with a vibrant mauve rim. The nose opens with intense strawberry jam, toasty black and red berries, sweet chocolate, and spiced vanilla. On the palate, rich, juicy red plum, blackberry, and mixed berries meet a thread of medicinal herbs. Good acidity and plentiful tannins create a mouthwatering grip — structured enough for lamb or pasta with ragù, but ripe and open enough to drink beautifully tonight.

And that’s what makes this bottle so compelling: the same winemaking pedigree behind Nativ, applied to a completely different corner of Southern Italy. It’s a distinctly Sicilian wine, but you can see Ercolino’s broader philosophy at work — native grapes, serious winemaking, and plenty of character without an inflated price tag.

If you're pouring Nero d'Avola for the first time, this is the kind of bottle that shows you why Sicily matters. If you already know the grape, it's proof you don't need to spend twice as much to drink exceptionally well.
