About the Wine
Rossi di Montalcino is one of the best-value wines in all of Tuscany. And, because this wine is crafted with the same grape (Sangiovese Grosso) and comes from the same region in Montalcino as Brunello, you'll find enormous similarities between these two wines. James Suckling said, “It shares many of the qualities of Brunello: A complex flavor profile, fantastic with food, and is produced by many of the same top producers of Brunello. But you don’t have to wait long to enjoy it or pay a high price.”
Lazzeretti is the living image of high-quality Brunello (and Rosso) di Montalcino. They're a relative newcomer in Brunello, with production starting in 2001. Marco and Julia are brothers and sisters who personally oversee the production and business. They make around 2,000 cases per year, as well as a small amount of Rosso, Riserva, Grappa, and extra virgin olive oil. Although the distribution of the Lazzeretti label started at the turn of the century, the Lazzeretti family has been producing wine since the 80s. It wasn't until Marco decided to produce wine from their grapes for their own label.
Aging: 8 months in French oak barrels.
Tasting Notes: 100% Sangiovese Grosso. Intense ruby red with purple reflexes. The nose is beautiful, with ripe fruit and sweet refining woods aromas. On the palate, it's soft and full-bodied. A complete pleasure to drink and share! Pair this wine with red meat, chicken, roast meat, and half-seasoned cheese.
Reviews
Wild berry, rose and botanical herb aromas mingle with whiffs of spice on this bright red. Lithe and savory, the medium-bodied palate features juicy Marasca cherry, black raspberry, and star anise alongside polished tannins before closing on the barest hint of game.
