2019 Don Rocco Perrucci Montepulciano D'Abruzzo Riserva 12x750ml

  • From 40-Year-Old Vines At 350 Meters Altitude
  • Two Full Years In Oak After Cement Aging
  • "Open At The First Occasion" ~ 93 Luca Maroni
  • Daughters Of Don Rocco Perrucci, Estate Founder

About the Wine

Abruzzo's Montepulciano is the unsung hero of Italian reds — dense, dark-fruited, structured like a northern wine but priced like the south still matters.

This bottle comes from vines that have fed the village of Catignano for decades, part of the estate Don Rocco Perrucci built into the region's backbone.

His daughters Carla and Anna took over in 2018, launched a full rebuild during the pandemic, and named their new label Tenuta Tre Gemme as a salute to the family and the dirt that made it possible.

This Riserva is their tribute to Don Rocco himself — old-vine Montepulciano from a 40-year-old parcel at 350 meters, calcareous clay soils, hand-harvested in early November after the fruit has begun its natural dehydration on the vine.

That late hang concentrates everything: color, aromatics, tannin, the whole phenolic load. Vinification starts in steel, then 12 months in cement to settle the structure, followed by two full years in a mix of barrique and large oak to integrate the tannins and deepen the complexity.

The result is a wine with the concentration and aging curve of bottles twice the price.

Deep ruby-red in the glass. The bouquet opens on ripe cherry and blackberry, then moves into coffee, dark chocolate, tobacco, licorice — the kind of layered aromatics you expect from a decade-old Barolo

On the palate: powerful but harmonious, serious tannin that's already integrated, long finish with a balsamic lift.

Luca Maroni scored it 93 and said if structure doesn't scare you, this is the bottle to open on the first occasion. This is what punching above your weight class looks like.

The depth, the aging, the old-vine intensity — it's all here, and it's all for the price of two grocery-store Cabernets.

If you've been buying $50 Napa reds for weeknight drinking, this is the part where you stop.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby-red. Ripe cherry, blackberries, and berries on the nose, layered with coffee, dark chocolate, tobacco, and licorice.

Powerful and harmonious on the palate with integrated tannin, long persistence, and an elegant balsamic finish.

The nose opens with milk chocolate and maraschino cherry, then tangier notes of dried cranberry, fresh pepper and black licorice emerge. That tangy element continues on the palate with fresh, crunchy cherries and berries, plus more of the spicy, peppery heat. ~ 92 Wine Enthusiast

This ripe red has aromas of dried herbs, cherries, peach pits and mocha. It’s full-bodied with a bittersweet hint and lightly dusty tannins. Drink or hold. ~ 91 James Suckling
