About the Wine

"The 2018 Château La Création Pomerol surpassed my expectations. Just a delicious, elegant Pomerol."~Vinous Media

Just a little over 2 miles away from legendary Château Petrus and 1 mile from Château Le Pin in Pomerol, you’ll find a hidden little gem, Château La Creation.

Since 2012, this estate, formerly known as Tour Robert, is the property of the Gaye family. This well-established Bordeaux family also owns Châteaux Grand Corbin Manuel in Saint Emilion Grand Cru.

La Creation covers more than 11 acres, with vineyards mostly planted with Merlot, the great Right Bank queen, and a small percentage of Cab Franc and Cab Sauvignon. The 45-year-old vines thrive in a spectacular terroir, with soils formed of compact, clayey, sandy gravel, and a subsoil of iron-rich clay, commonly known as crasse de fer, Pomerol’s watermark.

La Creation winemaking team takes quality very seriously. Everything in the vineyard is carefully hand-worked, and the winemaking area and cellar are equipped with state-of-the-art technology. This results in elegant, classic, superior Pomerol, like this 2015 Château La Création Pomerol.

Coming from an epic 96-point vintage, that Vinous Media called "opulent, flamboyant," this brilliant Pomerol is a perfect blend of 54% Merlot and 46% Cabernet Franc.

There’s no doubt that Pomerol is synonymous with high quality. This appellation delivers some of the most coveted (and expensive) wines that the world has ever seen. So, finding a good value Pomerol is not easy. But we did it. Château La Creation is one of our best Pomerol deals ever.

Tasting Notes: An attractive nose, showing aromas of red cherry and blackcurrant. The palate is medium-bodied with red berries, cedar, and sea salt on the attack. An extremely balanced wine with a long and lively finish.

Reviews

The nose is fruity, precise, and offers concentration/intensity. It reveals notes of fleshy/fresh wild blackberry, blueberry, iris, and small notes of blueberries associated with touches of wild strawberry as well as slight hints of tonka bean and nutmeg. The palate is fruity, well-balanced, and racy and offers a small tension, a mineral frame as well as a fine suavity. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of fleshy blackberry and ripe/juicy blue fruits associated with small touches of blueberry/iris as well as hints of ripe/crushed raspberry, chocolate, toasted hazelnut, and a discreet hint of vanilla. ~93-94 VertdeVin

Unusually for Merlot-dominated Pomerol, this 13-acre vineyard is planted with 51% of the two Cabernets. The resulting wine is richly fruity and structured, with generous chocolate and black-coffee flavors as well as dark berry fruits. The wine needs time and will be best from 2025. ~93 Wine Enthusiast.

Very attractive depth of fruit here with chocolate, walnut, and berry character. Some bark, too. It’s medium-bodied with round tannins and a subtle, nicely flavored finish. Drink in 2023.~92 James Suckling.

The 2018 La Creation, which comes from 5.5 hectares of vine, has quite an expressive, verging flamboyant, bouquet of red berry fruit infused with black truffle and candied orange peel. The high percentage (43%) of Cabernet Franc imparts a light bell pepper tone. The palate is rounded and quite sumptuous on the entry, but then exerts a fine grip courtesy of its grainy-textured tannins. The blueberry aspect has been dialed down during the time in the barrel and there is enhanced spiciness that comes through on the finish. This surpasses my expectations. Just a delicious, elegant Pomerol. ~91 Vinous Media.

Alluring, with creamed raspberry and plum fruit carried by a velvety structure, ending with a swath of melted licorice and black tea notes on the finish. Drink now through 2028. ~90 Wine Spectator.
