About the Wine

When it comes to high-quality Brunello vintages, 2016 is at the TOP of its game. We just can't get enough of this exceptional year. And apparently, some of the most important wine critics can't either. James Suckling advises that "If you ever wanted a Brunello di Montalcino for your cellar to age for decades, then buy the 2016 vintage." Vinous Media called the 2016 Brunellos "well-muscled black stallions in their prime." And Wine Spectator called it a "Textbook growing season" and concluded by saying that the wines show "finesse, elegance, balance, and harmony."

One of the wines that shine particularly bright from the 2016 vintage, is Scopone's Brunello di Montalcino. This wine is a real treat. This wine was awarded 94 points not once, but twice, with Wines Critic calling it "Exceptional" and stating that "it confirms the greatness of an extraordinary vintage at Montalcino." And Decanter describes it as a classic Brunello with "huge tannins with crunchy acidity." We wholeheartedly agree!

Coming from a long-standing winery, Scopone has a storied and intriguing history. This estate was once a 19th-century farmhouse and became a refuge for the displaced during World War II. After some ups and downs, it was finally acquired by the Genazzani in 1992. Soon, it became a winery born of legend.

In 1993 the mythical winemaker Settimio Dinetti, born and raised among vines and wines, came bearing 50 liters of new wine from the old, old vineyard. Apparently, it was so impossibly delicious that the 50 liters were consumed within “a breath” during an anniversary dinner. Here's where the magic started. Under the guidance of expert winemaker Dinetti, Scopone released its first wine in 1997.

Scopone is the perfect combination of modernity and tradition. Tradition still snakes through the vines of Scopone, giving the wine a classic and distinctive character. But it is with state-of-the-art technology and modern winemaking that the wines achieve this level of excellence.

With love and passion, the vineyards expanded and were recently acquired by the Minari Family. The Minari family has continued the tradition and dedication to these vines. They have eager plans for further expansion. Under the Minari Family, “a new story is being born in the name of Brunello.”

This first-class Brunbello is ready to drink now. For such a decorated wine, it is best paired with grilled meat, braised boar, and succulent steak.

Aging: 30 months French and Slovenian oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: 100% Sangiovese. Ruby red color with sweet, ripe black cherry aromas, that are in perfect harmony with notes of tobacco, vanilla, and pepper. Full flavored and elegant, it finishes with notes of violet. Long long finish.

Reviews

Very ripe red fruit and roses with a touch of savory earthiness and leather notes. Huge tannins with crunchy acidity. ~94 Decanter.

Muscular and rich in dark energy giving fullness and a delicate concentration of black prunes, blackberries, black tea leaves, wild myrtle, juniper berries, and cloves. The burnt citrus in the background brings back memories of winter afternoons in front of the fire with hints of cinnamon, vanilla, cedar chippings, and mandarin rind. Full-bodied, velvety fine-grained tannins and a savory well-distended finale of medium progression. Exceptional, it confirms the greatness of an extraordinary vintage at Montalcino. Better from 2021. ~94 WinesCritic.com

Sweet, ripe black cherries on the nose with violets and dried rose petals. Full-bodied with firm, slightly austere tannins. Yet, it remains fresh and vivid. Turns lightly bitter on the finish with some burnt orange peel. Drink after 2022. ~93 James Suckling.
