Is 2018 Ao Yun the Best Chinese Wine Ever?

Louis Vuitton Moët Hennesy is the world's largest luxury goods conglomerate, and is best known for owning high-end brands such as Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Moët & Chandon, Hennessy, Châteaux d’Yquem just to name a few.

Recently, the world leader in luxury uncorks a Chinese wine venture that takes us to the world-class Bordeaux-style wines in the foothills of the Himalayas, nestled on the banks of the Mekong River. Yo0u will find a remote corner of paradise, Ao Yun - which aptly means “flying above the clouds”. The stunning vineyard lives up to its name, with a high altitude reaching between 2,200 and 2,600 meters above sea level.

Agriculture is a cornerstone of economic growth in the Mekong River with centuries' worth of experience. The skills and techniques led to Ao Yun's epic journey to create a unique and elegant world-class wine. The entire process from the vineyard to the cellar is unparalleled.

The magical vineyard is not only producing your typical Bordeaux varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot) but also wines worthy of competing with the best in the world.

One of their wines, the very promising 2018 Ao Yun, is known to be the first “cru” from China to enter La Place de Bordeaux. As you may know, La Place de Bordeaux is one of the world's oldest marketplaces, its origins stretching back 800 years. Simply put, it's a collection of around 300 wine distributors that sell two-thirds of all wine produced in Bordeaux to merchants around the world.

Wine Critic, James Suckling, gave this wine a 98-point review, the highest score he’s given to any Chinese wine. He stated: “I loved the depth and complexity of the nose that brings you deep down into the wine, showing blackberry, ink, tar, earth, incense, cloves, and black licorice. Thyme, too. And the purity of fruit with cassis is the real thing. This is full-bodied but it remains so fresh and vertical on the palate.”

It's best to say that Louis Vuitton Moët Hennesy is pushing the frontiers in the world of winemaking, this time by producing wines in a previously unexplored land.

Stay tuned for more adventures as we travel the world through wines, one bottle at a time.
