Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is the first Italian DOC.This place, -also referred to as “The King of All Wines”- was known to be the favorite of some of the most influential Popes, Kings, and Presidents of Italy. Montepulciano in Tuscany holds some of the world’s greatest hidden treasures. One of them is Fattoria Della Talosa.

Talosa’s story started over 50 years ago when Angelo Jacorossi acquired this beautiful historical estate, (and when I say beautiful, I really mean be-a-u-ti-ful.) The Jacorossi family started pushing very strongly to produce extremely high-quality wines, so much so that this estate became a watershed in the quality of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Today, this award-winning winery is being managed by the 3rd generation of the Jacorossi family.

This property comprises more than 80 acres of vineyards, established in one of the loveliest Crus in Montepulciano called Pietrose. This outstanding place is located at a 350–400-meter altitude, with the vineyards facing southwest. The vines thrive in medium-textured soils of Pliocene origin, with Tuff and clayey sands. These perfect terroir conditions, combined with the expert hands of winemakers Christian and Luigi, result in alluring, unique, and powerful wines.

The estate is ridiculously beautiful, a place that seems to be the set of a medieval time movie. Talosa’s historical cellar dates back to the 16th century. Visiting this place is like stepping back in time. The cellar is built in an underground area between Tarugi Palace and the Sinatti Palace, two of the oldest buildings in the city.

Aging: 3 years in the new oak French barrels, and some percentage in 2nd use.

Tasting Notes: 100% Sangiovese. Deep red color. The bouquet opens rich and complex on the nose, showing aromas of red berries, floral notes of forest violets, and hints of spices. On the palate, this super Vino Nobile Riserva shows an elegant combination of density and freshness, well-integrated acidity, and full-bodied taste, embedded in soft, ripe tannins that give this powerful wine a remarkable texture.

Reviews

The class and style of the producer are enhanced in the glass revealing notes of cherries, lemon peel, green tea leaves, walnut husk, and calendula in a subtle and not very pronounced way. Full-bodied, round, and with an important volume on the palate it shows grace and elegance in full and harmonic smoothness. Wow, a Riserva that remembers in a modern way the wines of the past for their frankness and beauty in the sip. Drink now or get old. ~95 WinesCritic.com

The 2016 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva opens smoky to a display of wild herbs and berries, with a whiff of sweet white smoke adding lift. This is sensual and opulent in feel, with polished red and black fruits giving way to salty minerals and grippy tannins under an air of purple-tinged florals. There's an incredible mix of primary concentration here, along with a balanced structure to match, tapering off with hints of licorice and violets, as residual acids keep the mouth-watering. This is a wine and vintage to watch. ~93 Vinous Media.

~93 Points, Luca Maroni.

This full-bodied red has enticing aromas of fragrant purple flowers, forest floor, and oak-driven spice. The elegantly structured palate features ripe red cherry, star anise, and coffee bean set against firm, fine-grained tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Plush, with black cherry, black plum, rich earth, mint, and tar flavors, this red is both dense and fresh. Balanced and generous, with refined tannins gracing the lingering, spicy aftertaste. Drink now through 2030. ~92 Wine Spectator.
